Arriving in Croatia – Medsailors Discovery

At the beginning of October we set off to Croatia for our first Medsailors sailing holiday. We chose the Medsailors Croatia Discovery route, departing from Split and visiting the Croatian islands. We arrived at London Gatwick at 3am(!) and after an early breakfast at Starbucks, we jumped on our flight to Split.

We booked the Medsailors airport transfer to Marina Baotic (where the boats live), which we were really impressed with as the driver was waiting at the airport for us as soon as we touched down. Shortly after we arrived at the marina and dropped of our bags, the skies opened and the most ridiculous downpour hit us. I think we must have brought the english weather with us! We hid in a cafe at the marina for the afternoon until it was time to meet our skipper and the rest of the guests on our boat.

We chose to pay extra for the catamaran so that we’d have more room as we were away for a week – and I’m so glad we did! The other boats are all lovely as well, but we decided to opt for comfort and the stability of the catamaran.

After a quick tour of the boat and a welcome drink, we spend a couple hours settling in and getting to know our companions for the week.

Our cabin for the week was a double berth with a little wardrobe and some handy storage – compact and cosy, but spacious enough for the two of us. We squeezed in a power nap before heading out for dinner – as we’d been up for well over 24 hours – and unpacked our things.

Due to the thunder and lightning on our first night, our skipper decided to stay at the home marina rather than sailing to our first destination. So, we headed into Trogir for our first dinner of the trip. I opted for a rather enormous portion of calamari – which was so fresh as we were by the coast!

The next morning brought a final spattering of rain, before making way for the sun we had flown to Croatia to find! We set sail from Marina Baotic to our first location – Milna, Brac.

Milna is a small town on the island Brac, with a few restaurants and shops dotted around the water front and a couple of swimming spots if you fancy a dip.

We moored up and had lunch cooked by our skipper Joe (who was an excellent cook) in the sunshine.

We went for our first dip in the Med after lunch – and the water was certainly colder than I was expecting!

Dinner was at one of the local restaurants, and was delicious once again. I opted for fried pink prawns and fries, and Tom chose Fritto Misto – which turned out to be a huge serving of calamari, whitebait and prawns. A lot of seafood, and all very tasty!

The next morning we set sail for our next location and had breakfast on the move. There really is nothing better than waking up to see the ocean all around you!

This was our skipper for the week, Joe. He had a huge amount of experience and sailing knowledge, was great company and an excellent cook!

Keep an eye out for the next few posts to read about the rest of our trip! Have you ever visited Croatia? Let me know where you went!
